Ford Motor Company has filed a patent indicating its intent to pursue an eleven speed automatic transmission.

The news was found in a little-noticed document published Apr. 9 by the US Patent and Trademark Office.

According to Autoguide, “The document includes details for three different embodiments of the transmission using different combinations of clutches, brakes and gears.”

“Currently,” the magazine notes, “the company has only announced plans for a 10-speed automatic transmission that will arrive in the 2017 F-150 Raptor pickup truck.” The Raptor is pictured above. Ford and GM are working together on the ten-speed.

A Ford spokesman wouldn’t confirm or deny the firm is working on an eleven speed transmission.

“As a technology leader, we submit patents on innovative ideas as a normal course of business. Patent submissions help protect our new ideas but do not necessarily indicate future business or product plans,” a spokesman said in an official statement.
